Digital Bulls Team Selects: August Picks

Between navigating the busy podcasting schedules we have here at Digital Bulls, it’s easy to forget that we’re podcast fanatics ourselves! That’s why in this instalment of the Digital Bulls Selects series, we feature each team member's favourite podcast that we have all had the pleasure of listening to this past month. If you want in-depth investigation, cut-through political analysis, side-splitting comedy or just a pick-me-up – these pods have you covered.
Content Producer Rachael’s podcast pick: Hooked’

Unmistakenly, Hooked is a crime story that takes listeners on an exceptional and very personal tour of America’s opioid epidemic.  When Tony Hathaway was arrested outside a Seattle bank in February 2014, it brought an end to one of the most prolific bank robbery streaks in American history. Hathaway robbed 30 banks in a single year. All within a 30-mile radius of his suburban home. But that’s not the most surprising part. Before Hathaway was a masterful bank robber, he was a top design engineer at Boeing.  one of America’s most important companies. Hathaway travelled the world in business class. All the while, working on the 747 while hiding a gigantic secret: an OxyContin addiction that ultimately caused his demise.

Overall, American author and journalist Josh Dean uses three years of conversations with Hathaway to create Hooked. A different kind of crime story that takes listeners on a tour of America’s opioid epidemic.

Rachael says: “This podcast represents investigative journalism at its finest – I enjoyed learning about very real human issues. A fascinating true-crime documentary that explores the real lives behind the opioid crisis. So gripping – I had to binge it all in one sitting.”

Publicist Sol’s podcast pick: Pitch Side

Youtubers and internet sensations Oliver Fletcher (also known as Reev) and Theo Baker discuss the hottest topics in football and sport. Two huge Arsenal fans (get in), regularly joined by fellow internet and social media personalities. They give opinions on their own team’s performances as well as their rivals!

Pitch Side brings together some of Youtube’s most notorious football names in the name of fierce debate and predictions. The guests stick their necks out on the line, so prepare for some strong opinions. On why Sol chose Pitch Side, he said:

“Pitch Side features two YouTubers I’ve followed for ages – including Wafflin’ podcast star Theo Baker – in their quest to answer the unanswerable questions of sport. Their endless debate and argumentative nature make for great watching, and the inclusion of an interesting guest each week means there’s always new opinions.”

Managing Director Matt’s podcast pick: ‘The News Agents’

Emily Maitlis, Jon Sopel and Lewis Goodall – three of the UK’s top journalists – host a brand-new daily news podcast titled The News Agents. A Global Player Original and Persephonica production, the series is somewhat of a blend of top journalism and humour all in one. Maitlis, Sopel and Goodall present the daily news with a deep analysis, clever comments and a dose of sarcasm.

They’re not just here to tell you what’s happening, but why. Expect astute analysis and explanation of the day’s news – and a healthy dose of scepticism and the ability to laugh at it all when needed! If you want to keep up to date with what’s happening in the world and get an intelligent view on it, do not miss this show.

On why this podcast has gripped him for the past month, Matt said “I love news, politics, world events based podcasts. The News Agents is the latest Global original podcast to have spiked my interest. Broadcasting legends Emily Maitlis, Jon Sopel & Lewis Goodall have switched sides to launch a refreshing and no holds barred take on the day’s events – unfiltered, unashamedly sceptical and ever so slightly ballsy! A yes from me.”

Graphic Designer Matty’s podcast pick: 99% Invisible’

99% Invisible is a sound-rich, narrative podcast hosted by Roman Mars about all the thought that goes into the things we don’t think about — the unnoticed architecture and design that shape our world. With approximately 500 million downloads, 99% Invisible is one of the most popular ensign podcasts right now.

Listening to each episode feels like a little dose of enlightenment – you always come away with something that sticks in your head and gives you a new perspective on something.

Matty says the podcast has brought him great joy and insight into the unnoticed structures in our world: “I like the way I can learn from this podcast and it inspires me to think about design in a new way, something I can apply to my work.”

Studio Engineer Cam’s podcast pick: ‘Tape Notes’

Tape Notes is a podcast about the art and craft of music production. Hosted by John Kennedy, each episode reunites an artist and producer to talk about the highlights of their collaboration in the studio. Their conversations lift the lid on every stage of the creative process, from the song idea through decisions on style and instrumentation to finessing the final product.

Full of fascinating anecdotes, the conversations also feature early demo versions and stem from the original session recordings. The result is a unique insight into the working methods of some of the most innovative and exciting talents in music. Cam had this to say about ‘Tape Notes’:

I come away from the Tape Notes podcast feeling inspired, creative, and motivated. It’s a great way to learn more about the topics I’m interested in, particularly music production.”

Production Assistant Pavit’s podcast pick: The Tiny Meat Gang Podcast’

Pavit’s August favourite is The Tiny Meat Gang Podcast, a co-hosted series by Canadian comedians and internet personalities Cody Ko and Noel Miller. The two talk about anything and everything, whether it’s UFC, F1 racing, streaming, cooking or online drama, Cody and Noel take a silly approach to all topics weird and wacky in the hope of making people laugh.

On why The Tiny Meat Gang Podcast was Pavit’s favourite over the last month, she said: “Do you like to laughing for minutes on end about the dumb things going on in the world and on the internet? Then this is the one for you! Just two boys having a conversation that’s sure to have you in stitches.”

Digital Marketing Assistant Claire’s podcast pick: ‘Saving Grace’

Saving Grace is a young, fresh and fun show where you can find light entertainment, a good laugh, and keep updated about the latest social media hype. TikTok star Grace Keeling drives you through an hour of humorous interviews with other pop culture stars of the moment.

Throughout the series – with a new episode every Wednesday – there’s absolutely outrageous conversation with a selection of very special guests, from influencers to Love Island contestants. Grace also walks you through her wildlife, filled with embarrassing stories from university and beyond…

Claire says this pod has been her go-to over the past month, offering inside scoops on some of the hottest topics right now. “If you’re looking for celebrity gossip, dirty jokes and strong opinions, then I highly recommend this podcast,” Claire said. “It never fails to make me laugh and is always a great listen.”
